Lana Del Rey in Shades Of Cool and Lolita (1997) by Adrian Lyne.

Lolita has been a book/movie that has inspired Lana through her entire career. The book by Vladímir Nabókov has on its first paragraphs the famous lines “Light of my life, fire of my loins”, wich are also featured in the song Off To The Races. Born To Die and Ultraviolence are full of hidden references to the book and the movies (mainly the 97 version, with Dominique Swain). The song “Carmen” for exemple: in Nabókov’s novel, we have “Carmen” as a code name for Mr. Quilty, the man who takes Lolita away from Humbert Humbert. This name appears several times in the novel, even in the middle of poëms. “Lolita” also featured in Born To Die is an explicit love declaration to the novel. The demo (and the video) for it make clear the innocent atmosphere and the childishness of the lyrics. It’s not coicidence the fact that Lana has a certain preference for older men co-starring her videos (as we see in Ride and Shades Of Cool). The latest visual reference made to the 90’s movie version of the novel is the scene where Lana dances while being watched by her man (much more older than her). In the movie, we have the same kind of loosy dance performed by Lolita, as she is also being watched by Humbert. This is all without glimpsing into the unreleased songs, that also have thousands of millions of Lolita references.
